In this article, we discuss the development of a user-friendly and scalable Point of Sale (POS) system using JavaFX and Scala. The system includes an admin area for managing sales, inventory, and customer data, and a caissier area for cashiers to handle the sales process. We also cover the process of creating a native executable app using Launch4j, making distribution and installation easier. today’s competitive retail environment, having a reliable and efficient point-of-sale system is essential for businesses of all sizes. That’s why we created a dynamic and scalable Point of Sale (POS) system using JavaFX and Scala. This project is a complete solution for managing sales, inventory, and customer data, providing real-time reporting and data visualization.

Our POS system is designed to be user-friendly and easy to use, with a clean and intuitive interface that makes it easy for cashiers to add orders and manage the sales process. The system is also built to be scalable, so it can handle large amounts of data, and can be easily integrated with other systems.

The project is using JavaFX for the GUI and the data visualization, and Scala as the main programming language. The system uses MySQL as the database management system and uses Sbt as the build tool. The application is also using launch4j to create a native executable file.

Caissier Area

The caissier area of the system is designed to make it easy for cashiers to add orders and manage the sales process. This includes features such as adding order items and searching for products.

When a cashier wants to add an order, they can select the products they want to sell by searching for them by name or barcode, and then add them to the order. The system also allows cashiers to add multiple items to an order and update the quantity of the item.

The cashier area also includes a feature for searching for products, which allows cashiers to quickly find a product by its name or barcode. This makes it easy for cashiers to add products to an order, even if they are not familiar with the product.

Security

The security in the caissier area is also an important aspect, the cashier area is protected by a login system that uses a combination of username and password for authentication. The system also has a feature for managing user access, which allows the admin to control which users have access to the cashier area and what actions they can perform.

The admin area of the system includes a dashboard that provides an overview of the sales data, including total sales, number of orders, number of cashiers, and total profit. The dashboard also includes various charts, such as a pie chart that shows the total sales by cashier, and a line chart that shows total sales by semester.

In addition to the dashboard, the admin area also includes features for managing the system’s data, such as the ability to filter data by month and year. This allows the admin to get a more detailed look at the sales data and make more informed business decisions.

Technical Challenges

One of the main technical challenges we faced while developing the project was creating a scalable and efficient system that could handle large amounts of data. We overcame this challenge by using a combination of JavaFX and Scala, which allowed us to create a responsive and efficient system that can handle large amounts of data.

Another challenge we faced was integrating the different components of the system, such as the user interface, the database, and the reporting and data visualization features. We overcame this challenge by using a modular design and by breaking the project down into smaller, more manageable parts.

Finally, we faced a challenge in creating a native executable file for our project, but we managed to solve it by using Launch4J, which is an open-source tool for wrapping Java applications into Windows native executables.

Creating an Executable App

To create an executable app for our POS system, we used a tool called Launch4j. Launch4j is an open-source tool that can be used to wrap Java applications into Windows native executables. It allows you to create an executable file that can be easily distributed and run on different systems, without the need for users to have Java installed on their computers.

The process of creating an executable app using Launch4j involves several steps:

  1. First, you need to create a config.xml file that contains the settings for your executable app. This includes things like the output file name, the main class, and the JRE version that should be used.

  2. Next, you need to run the Launch4j executable, passing in the config.xml file as a parameter.

  3. The Launch4j tool will then generate an executable file, along with an associated icon file, which can be distributed and run on different systems.

The process of creating an executable app using launch4j is straight forward and easy, it can be done using the command line or using the GUI.

By creating a native executable file of the POS system, it makes the distribution and installation process more easier, it eliminates the need of installing the java runtime environment on the client machine.

In this project, we have developed a POS system that includes a complete set of tools for managing sales, inventory, and customer data. The system provides real-time reporting and data visualization, and it is designed to be user-friendly and easy to use. The system is also built to be scalable, so it can handle large amounts of data and can be easily integrated with other systems.
